Beach Guide Costa Maya

Costa Maya coastline has miles and miles of shore from Punta Herrero to Xcalak, the kind of beaches you dream about. A chain of reefs, part of the Mesoamerican Reef System, the second longest in the world, shadows the Costa Maya and behind this massive natural barrier the sea is calm and the waves caress the shore.

There are lots of beaches to choose from. In Puerto Angel (about 13 Km south from Mahahual) and Sian Ka'an Bio Reserve you find beautiful pristine beaches with powdery white sand and turquoise-blue water color; in Mahahual there is a shallow reef barrier that reaches the water surface so the sea is kind of a small atoll with warm and calm water, otherwise in other areas as Xcalak the reef contributes to the growth of seagrass bed in waters where the sea looks darker.

Check out your favorite beach from our list:

Beach Puerto Angel
Puerto Angel is the most spectacular beach of the whole Costa Maya, it means "Angel's Port" in Spanish ... maybe because it looks like paradise.
Here you get several miles of cool white powder sand, the water is crystal clear turquoise blue, and the wave action is just right, not too hard and not too soft.
You can snorkel just off the shores and see an array of tropical fish, the coral reef barrier is only 20 m off the coast. There is no sea grass obstructing your swim in the water.
This beautiful stretch of Mexican Caribbean beach is still unexplored, if you like pristine landscape and unspoiled nature you won't miss it!
Location: Puerto Angel area starts about 13 km South of Mahahual.
Facilities: Bar-Restaurants near by "Castillo Hotel" (about 3 kilometers north from Puerto Angel).

Beach Sian Ka'an
Sian Ka'an means "Gift of the sky" or "Where the sky begins". The word "Ka'an" is Mayan for "sky", it's the name given by the ancient Maya to South Quintana Roo. The Sian Ka'an is the third largest protected area in Mexico (approximately 1.3 million acres), it has been a Mexican national park since 1986 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
Sian Ka'an not only does it have Mexico's most spectacular beaches (as Puerto Angel), but it is home to over 300 bird species and includes an extensive variety of ecosystems, such as islands, coastal lagoons, wetlands, coastal dunes, petenes and Mangroves. The reserve also includes some 23 known archaeological sites of the Maya civilization.
Guards employed by the governmental SEMARNAT organization are stationed at the entrances to enforce the Reserve regulations, there is a charge of about $ 4 USD as a fee entrance per person per day.
Entering into the Bio reserve you can admire a beautiful stretch of white beach and the superlative beauty of its landscapes.
Location: Sian Ka'an is located 40 km North of Mahahual and it's reachable from asphalted road that starts 4 km north from Mahahual Downtown.
Facilities: Currently there are no restaurants and no places to stay at the Sian Ka'an.

Mahahual it's the right place for relaxing, diving, snorkeling and eating fresh fish.

Beach Xcalak
The beaches are different than the rest of the coast in that the water is quite shallow at the water's edge.
Xcalak National Reef Park Authority protects the area, the beaches are perfect for snorkeling because of the proximity to the coral reef.
Location: 50 km South of Mahahual, not far from the Belize Border.
Facilities: Several small restaurants, beach bar, hotels and services.
